GIs Burn Ft. Ord
A stockade rebellion at Ft. Ord, Aug. 12-13, ended with two barracks and a messhall burned to the ground and another barracks building partially damaged by a fire-bombing. The rebellion at the Special Processing Detachment Stockade, a minimum security prison where nearly 80% of the inmates are held for being AWOL, was sparked when military police arrested two prisoners because one did not wear a hat and the other didn't have his shirt tucked in. The jailing of three black WACs on various charges also contributed. The women were apparently arrested because they associated with a militant black GI on the base.
