Crowd Battles Cops To Protect AWOL Sailor
Wellesly Mass (UPI): Two hundred persons engaged in a fist-swinging, rock throwing brawl Monday night (June 24, 1968), outside the church where a young sailor is seeking sanctuary.
Fifty local and state police battled the group for 30 minutes outside the Natick-Wellesley Community Church where runaway seaman Allen Loehner of Milwaukee is seeking refuge from authorities.
Police said the demonstrators were evenly split between members of the New England Resistance and a group identifying itself only as "returned Vietnam War Veterans."
Police made no effort to remove the 20 year old sailor whoi entered the church Sunday after leaving the Navy three weeks ago rather than report to his next ship, a destroyer, at Newport, R.I.
