Fort Dix Uprising
According to Andy Stapp of the American Servicemen's Union, prisoners at the Dix Stockade took part in an open rebellion on June 5. Inmaates of blocks 66 and 67 were ordered to stand in formation for five hours in the hottest part of the day, without a break. This touched off the dissent that had been seething in the stockaade for weeks, about the starvation rations, long pre-trial confinements, raacism and interference with mail. More than 100 prisoners smashed windows, threw beds and footlockers out of the barracks and set buildings afire. The insurrection was put down with massive force - 250 troops armed with riot guns and tear gas. ASU member Bill Brakefield was beaten unconscious.
