GI's To March: This Time For Peace

IT IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL FOR GIS WEARING CIVILIAN CLOTHES TO MARCH IN THE GIS AND VETS MARCH FOR PEACE ON OCTOBER 12.
IT IS YOUR RIGHT AND MORAL DUTY TO DEMONSTRATE.
ONLY THEN WILL THE PUBLIC KNOW OF THE SOLDIER'S CONCERN.
ONLY THEN CAN WE END THIS WAR
LET THE ONES WHO MUST DIE FORE PEACE, WAGE PEACE ALSO- Lt. Hugh Smith

Lt. Smith and other active duty GIs and Bay Area veterans are giving servicemen an excellent opportunity to express their disapprovaal of being sent to fight an immoral, unjust aand unnecessary war in Southeast Asia. If every anti-war Gi will utilize this chgance, it will do more to end this war than all the diplomats with their conferences and plans.

This march is being watched by the brass all the way up to the Secretary of Defense. It is going to end once and for all their baloney about how GIs are eager to go to Nam. This march has made the brass afraid of the GI. That is rare and that is soomething that no GI can allow top slip by unexploited.

Early in the year, some GIs at Fort Jackson tried to hold a pray-in for peace at the post chapel. The MP's arrested them and it hurt the Army's image far worse than if the pray-in had taken place. The brass had to drop all charges. Now they know better than to arrest people who aare engaged in perfectly legal protest.

The march is perfectly legal and the brass can not do a thing to stop GIs from organizing it, or marching in it. They are trying to ship smith to Formosa on September 30. It remains to be seen if they are successful. They gave AIC Michael Locks and AIC John Bright, two other organizers, orders to ship to Utah two weeks ago, but backed down after Locks and Bright sought a Federal court injunction against the obviously punitive order. Lt. Smith's case is in the courts and it is unknown as we go to press if he will be shiupped out or not. THE MARCH WILL TAKE PLACE REGARDLESS.

GIS in uniform and in civilian clothes will head the parade. They will be clearly identified as active duty servicemen by banners and by "GI for Peace" hats (for those in civilian clothes). GIs will be followed by reservists, veterans and civilians, in that order.

If you are restricted to base or if you are too far away to join the march, you can still make it a success. Send a letter or telegram to GIs and Veterans for Peace... Get together with your anti-war friends and send a message as simple as "we're active duty GIs and would like to join the GIs and Vets March for Peace if we could." The total number of GIs who do so will be announced at the end-of-march rally.

Smith, Locks, Bright, other GIs and veterans have put the hawks on the run by organizing this march. Its up to you to keep them there. All GIs who read this paper and all your friends should either march or write in or telegram support. A massive show of the GIs desire for peace, expressed on October 12th, will do more than any other single act to force the government to stop bull shitting about peace and send the wwar in Vietnam.
