Stand by for incoming! Jim Slotek blew it big-time with his review of Sir! No Sir! ("Fighting 'Nam war myths," Sun, July 5), Jane Fonda betraying brave fighting men is a myth? We have pictures, recordings, written and spoken statements, statements from our POWs. What more proof do you want of her betrayal?
American soldiers were not spit on because they didn't return to civilian airports? The troops were flown back to Travis Air Force Base, about 80 miles from San Francisco. They also flew into Norton AFB in southern California, and McChord AFB in Washington. But the worst incidents occurred in San Francisco. The troops deplaned at Travis from military charter flights from SEA.
They then took buses, taxis, whatever they could find to San Francisco International Airport to catch flights to wherever home was located. We were actually cautioned NOT to wear our uniforms in San Francisco because of the things happening there.
I can personally vouch for what happened at San Francisco's airport. They spat on us, they called us filthy names, they threw feces at us, rotten fruit, foul liquids. It happened! Government-fostered myths? What a crock!
I do believe that Slotek must have flunked history in school, or else he was taught by an anti-American, anti-war, hippie freak.
